What we do on a roof.

Lake County roofs take more wind and more ice than the rest of Chicagoland. Everything below is built for that: ice and water shield six feet up the eaves, ring-shank nails, and ridge vent on every replacement.

Ask about your roof
  • Roof replacementTear-off to the deck, ice and water shield at the eaves and valleys, synthetic underlayment, then Owens Corning Duration or CertainTeed Landmark shingles. Most ranches and bungalows close up in one day.
  • Roof repairLifted shingles after a lake wind, a cracked pipe boot, flashing that let go at the chimney. Fixed the same week we see it, with the patch matched to the roof.
  • Storm repairAfter hail or wind the crew tarps the open spots first, photographs every slope, and puts the repair in writing. Nobody goes on your roof without your permission.
  • Flat roofsModified bitumen or TPO on detached garages, additions and the flat sections of split-levels.
  • Gutters and downspouts5-inch and 6-inch seamless aluminum, hung the day the roof is finished.
  • Chimney flashing and skylightsStep and counter flashing cut into the mortar joint. Velux deck-mounted skylights, flashed with the kit and not caulk.
Tomas, owner of Harbor Point Roofing, with a clipboard in front of a house

Tomas started Harbor Point in 2008 with one truck and a ladder rack.

He had spent eleven years on other crews between North Chicago and Lake Forest before he put his own name on a truck. The shop moved to Grand Avenue in 2011, and the crew is now nine roofers on two trucks, all on payroll. Ana runs the office and answers the phone.

We put architectural shingles on almost every house, we do not sell a roof when a repair will hold, and the number you hear on the phone is the number on the paper.

The only thing I ask of a customer is to let me walk the roof before I price it. The only thing I promise is that the paper and the phone say the same number.

Tomas walked the roof with my husband, sent the estimate two days later like he said, and the crew had the tear-off and the new roof done by four. They ran the magnet over the lawn twice before they left.

Two other companies said the leak at the chimney meant a whole new roof. Harbor Point re-flashed it in an afternoon and told me the roof had six or seven years left in it. Honest people.

The wind in March took a dozen shingles off the north slope. They tarped it that evening, photographed everything, and the repair bill matched the written estimate to the dollar.

Questions people ask us.

Do you need to get on my roof to give me a price?
Yes, and only with your permission. Tomas asks before he sets the ladder, takes photos of every slope, and shows them to you before he leaves. If you would rather he stayed on the ground, he can measure from the ground and the photos, and the estimate will say so.
How fast is the written estimate?
Within two business days of the roof walk, by email, itemized line by line. If you need it sooner for a closing, say so on the call and Ana moves it up.
What happens after a storm?
Call us. If water is coming in, a crew comes out the same day or the next morning to tarp the open spots. We photograph the damage, write up the repair, and give you the photos and the estimate. Nobody goes on the roof until you say so.
Why the ice and water shield six feet up?
Lake County roofs ice-dam more than roofs twenty miles inland. Code asks for the membrane two feet past the inside wall line. We run it six feet up the eaves and the full length of every valley, because that is where the water sits in February.
What does the license number on this page mean?
Illinois requires anyone roofing for pay to hold a state roofing contractor license. The Unlimited class covers residential, commercial and industrial roofs. Our number is 104.000000, a demo number on this sample site. A real one can be checked on the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation license lookup.
